Over at alyosha.com, my working website, I have uploaded a Power Point presentation on the Death Penalty, given from a Catholic perspective. Nice job! I agree with you, but couldn't detractors say that in the section on deterrence that people don't necessarily have to see an execution to be deterred by it?
And your point about the death penalty being an act of despair--absolutely!
Researchers (you know, smart guys) say people must witness it to get the deterrent effect. Just knowing it happened, or happens, isn't enough. The paper I did was generously footnoted, but this little slide show isn't. Too much work.
Gotcha. I think I dream in Chicago Manual of Style by now.
